OUR HISTORY

Southeast Texas GigaPOP (SETG) builds on a history extending back to one of the first National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Research and Education networks, SesquiNet which was created in the mid-to-late 1980's to connect university members to high performace computing centers in a cost effective way.  As part of a larger regional initiative, in 1997 Baylor College of Medicine, Rice University and the University of Houston collaborated on the creation of the Texas GigaPOP, one of the original interconnection points for Internet2's original network, Abilene.  As time and technologies changed, the 501.3(c) that had been organized as the Texas GigaPOP was repurposed to support the new state-wide network (LEARN) and the original members of the Texas GigaPOP reconstituted their activities as the current consortium activity new named the Southeast Texas GigaPOP.

Building on this history, and to further the collaboration among research and education communities, SETG has grown ten-fold from a 10Gb/s network to a 100Gb/s network and strives to provide additional value-added services to its participants such as content delivery, commodity peering and metro ethernet services.
